Main two night markets we frequented were
Liuhe night market - mostly focused on foods. Most of the foods we tried here were very good
Ruifeng night market - little bit more to the north, a lot of other activities available too. The best chicken is here (천사지파이)
We'll mainly talk about those two, and add some Taipei 특별출연.
Liuhe Night Market
Busy with a lot of street food vendors.. some of the best foods we had were from this street. For some of these things, we probably walked by it a hundred times and never noticed. it took me looking up on the internet what kind of food were popular at these markets for me to try them.
Maybe I'll just be a little more adventurous next time?

Just some old dude selling some fat ass squids. 2-3 of the same shops all next to each other. different sauces available.
About 5 bucks for a small one (middle one in the picture). Good for two.

Exists everywhere.
Meh.
★☆☆☆☆
Just some fried, pretty greasy and a lot of batter.
You can see the awesome squid in the back though.
★★★★☆
Grilled to perfect juiciness. It'd take them like 5 minutes for a small one (but it's like 3 dollars)
★★★★☆
This lady takes these oysters and just cooks them right up in some batter that's chewy and comes out crispy
★★★☆☆
Hard Japanese style mochi grilled up and put in some sauce. I think it was good but honestly don't remember very well.... couldn't have been that bad.
LIUHE MARKET'S HIGHLIGHT
★★★★★
and finally the highlight.. the sandwich.
We saw some long-ass lines and coudln't understand what the hype was about, so naturally had to try it. They grill up the taiwanese sausace (pretty fatty but they counter that with raw garlic pieces, which matches up very very nicely), and they also grill and split up the rice-sausace (made wikth rice inside), which acts as a hotdog-bun! Brilliant! and they put some pickle-like veggies and this thing was just umami exploding in your mouth.
They give it to you in a wrap, so you can "twist" the bottom and the hotdog pushes out from the top so you can just take a bite of that.... yum.
Patric: I still think about this once in a while... I'd go back to Taiwan just for this and have this for dinner every night
Ruifeng Night Market
There are a lot of activities you can do here, I would say the food is secondary. Except for this one place. We'll get to that.
★★☆☆☆
German-style (apparently) pork feet that were chopped up upon order. Served with mustard based sauce and raw onions.
Most pieces were fine but some were just way too chewy. Wouldn't go back.
★★★☆☆
Pretty standard friend chicken. Any chicken in Taiwan is good. This is good, just nothing special. There were different kinds of sauces, I think I tried 2 and they were both decent.
★★★☆☆
Long wait so we tried, spicy like they said. Nothing special.
★★★☆☆
Not too bad, but too strong of a ginger taste, can't beat DTF.
★★★★☆
This thing was literally sold everywhere but I actually really liked them. It's like a potato dough and chewy and a little bit on the sweet side. Great for dessert.
★★★★☆
Probably the first time I heard of green onion pancake, when I landed in Taiwan. This specific place in Ruifeng market was very strategically located. Food was good too, but it was just right next to the long line of people waiting for the next food.
RUIFENG MARKET'S HIGHLIGHT
★★★★★
last but definitely not least.. the fried chicken from the infamous Angel Fried Chicken.
Yes, I wish I took some better pictures because this thing is BEYOND JUICY. It's almost DRIPPING WET from all the juices.
I'm sure you know as the reader, well, since the reader is me, that Sinae didn't use to like fried foods. She's still not like a huge fan, but she dabbles here and there.
This is probably a good description of how she was. Also a pretty spot on description of me right now as I'm writing...
Obviously you have to get through the very long line, but it moves fast! If I spoke Mandarin and had their app, I would order online and pick up, but well, maybe someday.
It was so good that we tried it two more times (we as in Sinae). Taiwan is so awesome that you can order it via uber eats and pay the total of 5 bucks for this whole chicken, and it'll still be juicy delicious.
5/5 hands down
some minor description
when did you go? how did you find out?
★★☆☆☆
do you wanna go back?
